L-3 Communications Awarded Order to provide upgrades to the Space
Shuttle's Solid Rocket Booster Integrated Electronics Assembly
NEW YORK, NY, December 19, 2002 - L-3 Communications (NYSE: LLL) announced
today that its Space & Navigation Division (L-3 S&N) has been
awarded an order by United Space Alliance (USA) to retrofit the existing
Integrated Electronics Assembly (IEA) for the Space Shuttle's Solid
Rocket Booster (SRB). The total value of the contract is $22 million.
The IEA is the
primary communications link between the SRB and the Shuttle's Orbiter.
The IEA provides the control electronics for the SRB during the
launch, ascent, separation, reentry and recovery phases of the mission.
The upgrade consists of replacement of the IEA internal Harness
Assemblies. The contract was awarded as part of NASA's dedication
to continued safety in the Space Shuttle program.

USA, a leading
