Customer Office Equipment

The customer office equipment consists of four separate hardware units - the Radio Base Unit (RBU), the Network Interface Unit (NIU), the Radio Base Unit (RBU) Antenna, and the Element Management System (EMS).

A Radio Base Unit is centrally positioned amongst the numerous subscriber sties, which communicates to the Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) located with each subscriber. One or more RBUs connect to a Network Interface Unit (NIU), which provides the interface to the Publicly Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). The NIU connects to the PSTN via one of several possible standard methods, including E1 trunks. Various configuration and deployment options allow PrimeWave 2000™ to be used for population densities ranging from sparse rural areas to dense cities.

The RBU - Radio Base Unit is the central radio equipment that communicates with all Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) in a given geographic area. The radio interface incorporates the signal coding and protocols to support the flexible allocation of radio bandwidth among a large number of subscriber units. It contains all of the electronics necessary to service up to 2500 subscribers, while it sets up and maintains up to 119 simultaneous user connections per 3.5 MHz radio carrier.

The NIU - Network Interface Unit provides the interconnection and integration of multiple Radio Base Units (RBUs) to and from the local PSTN and Network Management System. In doing so, it supports country specific PSTN protocols and signaling as required, including both Access Network to Switch and Switch to Switch types. The NIU is often configured as an Access Network (AN) providing one or more multi-link V5.2 AN interfaces to a Local Exchange (LE) in the PSTN.

The RBU Antenna - is the part of the transmitting or receiving system that is designed to radiate or receive electromagnetic waves. The RBU electronics are connected to an external omnidirectional or sectorized RBU antenna. Communication between SUs and the Wireless local loop takes place via external antenna.

The Element Management System (EMS) - is a personal computer based platform that is used to provide all the Operations, Administration, Maintenance, and Provisioning (OAM&P) control for the PrimeWave 2000™ system.
