Enabling seamless communications at incident sites by first responder
public safety agencies is an urgent homeland security issue. Until
sufficient spectrum is allocated and standardized mission-critical
technology adopted nationwide, the TACNET® system enables an immediate,
effective and cost-efficient solution to the first responder communications
interoperability challenge.
TACNET®
Overview
TACNET technology integrates stand-alone emergency vehicle electronics
into a unified command and control system which dramatically improves
functionality, ergonomics, efficiency and safety. The system features
a centrally located touch screen, mobile computing platform, innovative
control pod, head-up display, and voice activation.
The Interoperable Solution
A TACNET-equipped vehicle can become an effective communications
center in the field which allows first responders with incompatible
radios to communicate seamlessly.
If
equipped with multiple radios, a TACNET mobile command vehicle can
receive transmissions from multiple source bands – then digitally
simulcast the signal across the other bands. This versatile cross-band
repeater permits fire, police, EMS and other public safety agencies
with disparate radio equipment to talk to each other easily through
a TACNET relay vehicle.
The TACNET video display provides streamlined access to and management
of the relay function, with visual indication of the current channel
and group for each radio activated. TACNET can use dynamic
signal mixing to permit monitoring different
radios on different speakers in the vehicle. Priority
can be given to transmissions on the primary channel automatically
by muting the sound on the other vehicle speakers.
Communications interoperability through TACNET requires that agencies
pre-plan designated coordination frequencies. When activated, TACNET
enables all of the radios at an incident scene to appear to be tuned
to the same channel, even though some may be analog, digital, trunked,
not trunked, and/or operating on different frequencies. When any
participant transmits, all the other participants hear the message.
TACNET thus offers an immediate, readily available, and cost-effective
solution to the first responder communications interoperability dilemma
prevailing in today’s critical security environment.
