BRASHEAR LP AWARD
FOR EXCELLENCE AT PJAS
Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania, February 7, 2002:
Over the past 3 years, Brashear has provided the Award for Excellence in
Earth and Space Science
at the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS)
Conference. Now in its 68th year, the PJAS attracts
students from over 100 schools and has played a
pivotal role in encouraging junior high and high
school students to research some of the most fun and
interesting topics, such as "The Mystery of the Black
Hole", "Are Brace Wearers More Cavity Prone?" and "The
Mathematics of Snowflakes."
On February 2, 2002 at
the PJAS Conference, Brashear COO Dawn Rucker, shook
hands with a young scientist and awarded him with a
$100 prize. Hailing from Allderdice High School in
Squirrel Hill, the 9th grader's science topic was "An
Analysis of the Energy Spectrum of Cosmic Rays."
The PJAS has been a
success over the past 68 years due to a diverse group
of supporters across many disciplines. The supporters
are interested in taking an active role to influence
the young minds of today who will one day shape
America's technological and scientific future. Some of
Brashear's counterparts in this program are Intel
Science Talent Search, American Nuclear Engineer, and
the Society of Women Engineers. Another important
group are the volunteers who act as judges at the
event. This year, BLP sent 5 judges: Bill Arnold, Joe
Birsa, Tom Lehecka, Jason Mizgorski and Bill Verbanets.
The judges ensure that
the students' research was constructively critiqued
and scored in (1) analytical approach, (2)
experimental method, and (3) scientific thought.
Brashear is proud to take an active role in this
extraordinary event.
