L-3 Brashear Selected to
Polish 115-Year-Old Lens Manufactured
by John A. Brashear Co.
PITTSBURGH, PA, November 29, 2007 – L-3 Brashear,
a division of L-3 Communications, today cleaned and
inspected a 12-inch-diameter visual telescope objective
lens originally manufactured by the John A. Brashear
Co. in 1893. The lens is returning to Pittsburgh
from the Dudley Observatory in New York.
John Brashear was the foremost optician of his day. His
optic lenses and telescopes are still considered
to be among the finest refracting instruments ever
made. The John A. Brashear Co., now known
as L-3 Brashear, is part of L-3 Communications Corporation.
The lens is part of the Pruyn Equatorial Telescope
purchased in 1893, and the historic telescope will
soon resume its role after being refurbished and
installed at the Arunah Hill Natural Science Center
in Cummington, Massachusetts.
