BRASHEAR DELIVERS 100TH TRACKING PEDESTAL
PITTSBURGH,
PA, November 04, 2005 - L-3 Communications Brashear (L-3
Brashear), a division of L-3 Communications, today shipped the 100th tracking pedestal for the U.S.
Navy's Phalanx Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) Block 1B Surface Mode Upgrade. L-3 Brashear, under contract to Raytheon Company,
Louisville, KY, provides the two-axis, gyro-stabilized, electro-optical system that extends the capability of the CIWS to identify,
track and address threats in a full naval environment.
The pedestal integrates passive thermal tracking capability into the Phalanx's existing Anti-Air Warfare software,
significantly increasing Phalanx performance against Anti-Ship Missile (ASM) threats. It also allows Phalanx to be used in a
unique Anti-Air Warfare role against littoral warfare threats, such as helicopters, high-speed surface threats and terrorist
aircraft. The pedestal offers superior close-in fire control performance in a small, reliable, lightweight, easy-to-maintain
system. As a stand-alone system, Phalanx carries out functions usually performed by multiple systems, including search, detection,
threat evaluation, engagement and kill assessment.
Phalanx Block 1B, the latest upgrade with its surface mode configuration, augments the Anti-Air Warfare capability
by adding a forward looking infrared sensor (FLIR) capability that enables operators to visually track and identify targets before
engagement.
Phalanx is installed on most U.S. combatants and on those of 22 allied nations.
L-3 Brashear continues to work closely with Raytheon in order to maintain a team environment. It is because of the
teamwork and dedication by its manufacturing team that the program continues to be a success.
