PHOENIX, November 13, 2001 - ACSS representatives have taken a leadership role on an Industry Transponder Task Force formed by the FAA to determine modifications to Air Traffic Control (ATC) transponders on aircraft to meet security requirements for countering the new threats to aviation safety. ACSS personnel have been key technical contributors to this task force and the report generated from this effort.

The report, titled FAA-Industry Transponder Task Force Report, is intended to help airlines commence the decision process and initiate design and engineering efforts with vendors, manufacturers, and certification offices. The report was delivered to Margaret Gilligan, FAA Deputy Associate Administrator for Regulation & Certification, on November 5.

ACSS has proposed several product enhancements that will increase the level of air travel safety and security, while not interrupting service. The sophisticated design of the XS-950 Mode S Transponder (7517800/ARINC 718), currently flying on more than 4,000 aircraft, will allow operators to meet FAA requirements with a software upgrade that can be loaded onboard the aircraft. Line-replaceable units will not need to be removed and sent to a certified service and repair center, eliminating aircraft downtime. Software upgrades can be made in the field using an industry standard ARINC 615 data loader.

Operators flying with ACSS' first-generation Mode S transponder, the XS-910 (4061400), are encouraged to contact ACSS to discuss special incentives for upgrading their equipment to the XS-950.
