PHOENIX, August 14, 2001 - ACSS, an L-3 Communications & Thales Company, delivered its 5000th TCAS 2000 today to Northwest Airlines. TCAS (traffic alert and collision avoidance system) reduces the potential for mid-air collisions by identifying the position of nearby aircraft and is required safety avionics equipment onboard commercial aircraft.

ACSS' relationship with Northwest Airlines dates back to 1992 when Northwest became a launch customer for its first-generation TCAS II.

The TCAS 2000 became the industries' first second-generation TCAS II product when it was launched in 1997. ACSS' traffic alert and collision warning system has earned acclaim throughout aviation for its long range (able to track aircraft beyond 100 nautical miles) and its ability to be upgraded for future enhancements such as Automatic Dependence Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B).

One TCAS 2000 enhancement that ACSS is developing is a new Terrain Avoidance Warning System (TAWS) to be integrated into the TCAS 2000. The new product, called T2CASTM(Traffic and Terrain Collision Avoidance System), was announced at the Paris Air Show in June with certification anticipated for late 2002.

"We're very proud of our 5,000 TCAS 2000 deliveries," said Joe Hoffman, president of ACSS. "We thank Northwest for sharing in this event and my hat's off to our team who has designed, developed and marketed this product."

ACSS (Aviation Communication & Surveillance Systems), an L-3 Communications & Thales Company, is a leader in safety avionics systems. ACSS products include the TCAS 2000 and TCAS 1500 traffic alert and collision avoidance systems, a family of Mode S transponders and the T2CASTM, a combined traffic and terrain collision avoidance system. TCAS reduces the potential for mid-air collisions and provides an independent and complementary supplement to the air traffic control system. More than 8,000 units of ACSS's TCAS product are currently operating in commercial, corporate and military aircraft.
