NEW YORK, NY, July 24, 2000 – L-3 Communications (NYSE:LLL) announced today that its Aviation Communications and Surveillance Systems business unit has been selected by British Airways to provide its Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS)  2000 product to their fleet of Boeing 747 and 777 aircraft.  Under this contract, L-3 will provide equipment sets for 90 planes.

"With this award, L-3's TCAS 2000 is now standard equipment on all of British Airways' Boeing aircraft," said Joseph T. Hoffman, president of L-3’s Aviation Communications and Surveillance Systems. “Since TCAS 2000 is the industry’s most advanced system, we anticipate increased customer demand for our suite of air safety products in both domestic and international markets as carriers demand the latest technologies in situational awareness and aircraft safety.”

Required on all commercial aircraft operating worldwide, TCAS systems provide an important safety function.  L-3’s TCAS 2000 computes range, relative altitude and bearing of aircraft.  The product determines the collision potential with nearby aircraft, provides visual and aural advisories to alert pilots, and recommends the least disruptive vertical maneuver to achieve safe separation.

L-3’s TCAS 2000 system design allows for greater flexibility and ease of installation on a wide variety of aircraft.  In addition, TCAS 2000 is provisioned for processor and memory growth to allow for future upgrades.

L-3 Aviation Communications and Surveillance Systems business is a leader in avionics safety systems and has approximately 6,500 TCAS units installed in commercial, corporate and military aircraft.  TCAS reduces the potential for mid-air collisions and provides an independent and complementary supplement to the air traffic control (ATC) system.

Headquartered in New York City, L-3 Communications is a leading merchant supplier of secure communications systems and products, avionics and ocean products, training products, microwave components and telemetry, instrumentation, space and wireless products.  Its customers include the Department of Defense, selected US government intelligence agencies, aerospace prime contractors and commercial telecommunications and cellular customers.
