ACSS SURVEILLANCE PRODUCTS SELECTED BY AEROPOSTAL FOR FLEET OF DC-9 AIRCRAFT Includes TCAS 2000, Mode S and option for new T2CASTM Contact:
PARIS, FRANCE, June 21, 2001 - ACSS, an L-3 Communications & Thales Company, today announced it was selected by Aeropostal to supply Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance Systems (TCAS), Mode S Transponders and Vertical Speed Indicator/Traffic Resolution Advisory (VSI/TRA) displays for 16 DC-9 aircraft. Aeropostal is the largest airline in Venezuela. TCAS and Mode S Transponders are required safety avionics equipment onboard commercial aircraft. TCAS reduces the potential for mid-air collisions by identifying aircraft within 100 nautical miles. Mode S Transponders are used in conjunction with TCAS to identify and track the position of nearby aircraft. The contract also includes an option to upgrade its fleet to T2CASTM ACSS's new Traffic and Terrain Collision Avoidance System, when it becomes available in late 2002. T2CASTM is a safety avionics system that integrates aircraft performance-based Terrain Avoidance Warning System (TAWS) capability into ACSS's TCAS 2000, eliminating nuisance warnings without adding a line-replaceable unit (LRU). T2CASTM provides aviation customers with a unique combination of functionality, along with optional GPS and Windshear, without the size and weight of competing systems. It also meets all the important terrain safety standards required by the TAWS mandate (TSO C151a and C117a standards). T2CASTM is currently on display along with other ACSS products at the L-3 exhibit at the Paris Air Show, LeBourget, France, Hall 4, Stand B3. "We're very pleased to have our suite of safety avionics selected by Aeropostal," said Joe Hoffman, president of ACSS. "We also look forward to delivering our T2CASTM system to Aeropostal in late 2002." According to Omar Maldonado, Engineering Project Manager for Aeropostal, the ACSS safety products are the right solution for Aeropostal to meet current and future air safety mandates. "We evaluated all available options and the ACSS package was the best choice for our fleet of DC-9s. ACSS's expertise in certifying new aircraft makes them the natural choice for this award," Maldonado said. ACSS (Aviation Communication & Surveillance Systems), an L-3 Communications & Thales Company, is a leader in safety avionics systems. ACSS products include the TCAS 2000 and TCAS 1500 traffic alert and collision avoidance systems, a family of Mode S transponders and the T2CASTM, a combined traffic and terrain collision avoidance system. TCAS reduces the potential for mid-air collisions and provides an independent and complementary supplement to the air traffic control system. More than 8,000 units of ACSS's TCAS product are currently operating in commercial, corporate and military aircraft.
