PARIS, June 17, 2003 – ACSS, an L-3 Communications & Thales Company, is pleased to announce that Boeing Integrated Defense Systems has selected MASS™ (Military Airborne Surveillance System) and the XS-950SI Mode S Data Link Transponder with built-in IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) capability for their new Boeing 767 aircraft as part of the Global Tanker Transport Aircraft (GTTA) Program.

“We are proud to be a partner on the Boeing 767 Tanker Transport Program and bring an increased level of safety and situational awareness to military flight operations worldwide,” said Joe Hoffman, ACSS president.

MASS utilizes the same ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast) technology developed by ACSS for commercial aircraft, adding the unique military capabilities of rendezvous and formation position keeping, as well as ACSS’s proprietary “Encroachment Alert” function. MASS technology was developed as an enhancement to the ACSS TCAS 2000 system currently flying in over 6,000 commercial and military aircraft around the world.

During formation flight, the system works with the Mode S/IFF transponder to identify and distinguish between cooperative member and non-member aircraft. It supports unrestricted formation and rendezvous operations and can be installed on aircraft equipped with the TCAS 2000 and Mode S/IFF via a simple software upgrade. MASS complies with ATC guidelines to work in both military and civil airspace, providing TCAS/ACAS II operations during non-military flights.

The system was successfully demonstrated in May 2002 using a Citation V business jet and a United States Air Force Boeing 707 during an actual formation flight.
