PARIS, FRANCE, June 14, 2001 - L-3 Communications announced today that its Aviation Communications and Surveillance Systems (ACSS) division has been awarded a contract by Air New Zealand to supply Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance Systems (TCAS), Mode S Transponders and Vertical Speed Indicator/Traffic Resolution Advisory (VSI/TRA) displays for 16 Beech 1900 aircraft to be operated by Eagle Air. Eagle Air is a 100% owned regional subsidiary of Air New Zealand.

TCAS and Mode S Transponders are required safety avionics equipment onboard commercial aircraft. TCAS reduces the potential for mid-air collisions by identifying aircraft within 100 nautical miles. Mode S Transponders are used in conjunction with TCAS to identify and track the position of nearby aircraft.

This will be the first Standard Technical Certifications (STC) for the TCAS 2000 and XS-950 ATDL Transponder on board a Beech 1900.

Air New Zealand has also signed a new contract with L-3 ACSS to provide repair and overhaul services for ACSS products through its repair facility at Auckland International Airport in New Zealand. This new contract extends a long-standing relationship between the two companies. The Auckland Maintenance Base provides services to operators in the Asia-Pacific region.

"We're very pleased to continue our partnership with Air New Zealand, both through the sale of our surveillance products for Eagle Air and the continuation of our relationship with the Auckland repair facility," said Joe Hoffman, president of L-3 Communications' Aviation Communications and Surveillance Systems division. "This award positions our product line well as we continue to pursue international opportunities under our new joint venture with Thales Avionics."

According to John Van Slooten, Fleet Evaluation Manager for Air New Zealand, the ACSS surveillance suite was the right package to meet Eagle Air's needs. "We evaluated all available options and the ACSS package provided the best solution for our fleet of Beech 1900s," Van Slooten said.

L-3 Communications' Aviation Communications and Surveillance Systems division is a leader in avionics safety systems and has approximately 8,000 units installed in commercial, corporate and military aircraft. TCAS reduces the potential for mid-air collisions and provides an independent and complementary supplement to the air traffic control (ATC) system.

Headquartered in New York City, L-3 Communications is a leading merchant supplier of secure communications systems and products, avionics and ocean products, training products, microwave components and telemetry, instrumentation, space and wireless products. Its customers include the Department of Defense, selected US government intelligence agencies, aerospace prime contractors and commercial telecommunications and wireless customers.
