CHINA SOUTHERN SELECTS ACSS SURVEILLANCE PRODUCTS FOR B-737 AND B-747 AIRCRAFT

PHOENIX, June 1, 2001 - L-3 Communications announced today that its Aviation Communications and Surveillance Systems (ACSS) division has been awarded a contract by China Southern to supply Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance Systems (TCAS), Mode S Transponders and Vertical Speed Indicator/Traffic Resolution Advisory (VSI/TRA) displays for 20 Boeing B-737 and two B-747 airliners.

TCAS and Mode S Transponders are required safety avionics equipment onboard commercial aircraft. TCAS reduces the potential for mid-air collisions by identifying aircraft within 100 nautical miles. Mode S Transponders are used in conjunction with TCAS to identify and track the position of nearby aircraft.
