Press Release
L-3 Communications Space & Navigation
Key Supplier for the Cassini Saturn Mission
BUDD LAKE, NJ, August 18, 2004 — L-3 Communications
Space & Navigation (L-3 S&N), a division of L-3 Communications
Corporation (NYSE: LLL), supplied NASA’s Jet Propulsion
Laboratory (JPL) with four Reaction Wheel Assemblies (RWAs) in
1996 that are now being used to stabilize and maneuver the Cassini-
Huygens Saturn deep space probe satellite. The L-3 S&N reaction
wheels were activated upon rendezvous with Saturn and entry into
its orbit and are critical to the satellite attitude control
system and the clarity and resolution of the images being generated
of Saturn. The Cassini-Huygens mission will provide valuable
scientific data for at least four years, focusing on the study
of Saturn, its rings, magnetic field, and icy satellites, including
its largest moon, Titan.
The reaction wheel program is a continuation of L-3 S&N’s
heritage of producing highly reliable products for space applications,
including the support of the Space Imaging and Digital Globe earth
imaging satellite programs, NASA’s International Space Station
and the IridiumTM constellation.
“
This mission demonstrates our capability to produce high quality,
reliable space products,” said Paul Wengen, president of
L-3 Space & Navigation. “The success of this mission
further enhances our continued heritage in the support of nationally
visible space programs.”
