L-3 Communications Display Systems Awarded Cockpit Displays Contract
for NASA T-38N Electronic Flight Instrument Aircraft Upgrade

ALPHARETTA, GA, November 3, 2004 — L-3 Communications Display Systems (L-3 Display Systems), a division of L-3 Communications, announced today that it has been awarded a contract from the NASA Lyndon B. Johnson Space Flight Center, Houston, Texas, to provide cockpit displays for the NASA T-38N astronaut trainer/proficiency aircraft. The contract is expected to run for four years with initial deliveries slated for 2006.

Under the terms of the contract, L-3 Display Systems will manufacture and certify high-resolution, high-brightness 6² x 8² Primary Flight Displays (PFDs) and 4² x 5² Electronic Engine Displays (EEDs) for the NASA T-38N aircraft. The PFD and EED are “smart” displays with graphics generation, avionics processing, aircraft data concentration and interfaces within each PFD and EED. The displays are mounted side by side in each cockpit of the two-seat T-38N aircraft. Each display can present normal and reversionary modes so that a high degree of cross-cockpit processing and display redundancy is available for flight safety. The PFD and EED display symbology and formats will be tailored by NASA and L-3 Display Systems to present Primary Flight Displays, Weather Radar (WXR), Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS), Terrain Awareness and Warning System (TAWS), Data Link Weather, Flight Management System (FMS) routes, engine data, as well as system diagnostic information. The L-3 Display Systems PFD and EED will be certified to DO-178B Level A standards.

“We are honored to have earned this opportunity to provide displays to NASA for use by our nation’s astronauts,” said Bob McGill, president of L-3 Display Systems. “L-3 Display Systems is a leader in providing high-performance display systems for demanding environments and we look forward to providing the NASA T-38N fleet with our most advanced display technology.”
