Farnborough International Airshow Featured the L-3 Display Systems Large Area Avionics Display (LAAD)

This advanced digital display technology will revolutionize the cockpits in
both military and civilian aircraft alike
Amongst an array of L-3 products exhibited at this year’s Farnborough International Air Show (July 14-20, 2008) was L-3 Display System’s Large Area Avionics Display (LAAD).

The LAAD is the largest ruggedized active matrix LCD ever developed for use in a 5th generation tactical fighter aircraft. It features a double-width (20” x 8”) , 2560 x 1024 resolution (greater than HDTV), active matrix LCD with left and right independence, meaning that if one half of the display malfunctions, the other side can still be utilized. The dual infrared touch-panel display features separate Open System Architecture VITA 46 processors and LED backlighting. This type of low-energy backlight means it runs very cool in use, which is important in modern cockpits. Integration of all types of information includes, but is not limited to instrumentation, mapping, navigation and external sensor video inputs.
